VIC Division CEO Lucinda Hancock Appears on Channel Ten’s The Project to Discuss the Current Coconut Oil Trend

Coconut oil is a product that has risen to dizzying heights of fame thanks to social media influencers, wellness warriors and celebrities promoting their perceived benefits. Over the last decade its popularity has risen dramatically with some believing it improves instigation, aids with weight loss and practice daily “coconut oil pulling”.

Is Coconut Oil Good for You?

But is it actually good for you? How can we delve through the hype to gain sound nutritional, unbiased facts? Channel Ten’s The Project raised the question and invited Lucinda to join the conversation from a nutritional perspective.

Lucnda explained to the audience coconut oil is high in fat and raises bad cholesterol. “Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a better option. There’s also canola, corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, flaxseed and grape seed oil, all which contain significantly less saturated fat than coconut oil”.

“Coconut oil shouldn’t be omitted from a balanced diet” Lucinda notes, but cautioned it should be consumed in very small amounts as it is high in saturated fat and energy.

And there you have it. Enjoy in moderation!
