TuckerTalk provides practical and up to date information on contemporary issues affecting the nutrition of children cared for by childcare facilities and services.

How to Modify Recipes for Allergies – A Nutrition Australia publication with recipes suitable for children with allergies and how to modify your existing recipes to make them suitable for use. The publication provides information on label reading and shopping for children with allergies and includes recommendations for managing special diets at your centre.

Children’s Nutrition Kit (Free to new members in 2009) – Nutrition Australia’s Children’s Nutrition Kit is a booklet which includes 13 nutrition topics of interest to staff and parents of children cared for in the childcare environment. Material from the booklet can be photocopied and distributed to parents with confidence that you are providing useful, up-to-date and accurate nutrition information.

Menu Assessment – For childcare centres that provide food, this service helps ensure that accreditation guidelines are being met in terms of food and nutrition. Menu assessments are conducted by a Dietitian/Nutritionist who visits the facility and provides a comprehensive report. Menu assessments are based on recommendations outline by the National Childcare Accreditation Council, specifically principle 6.1 of the QIAS Quality Practices Guide. Menu based on the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Recommended Dietary Intakes (RDIs) and the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents.

Staff Talks and Workshops – our qualified Dietitian/Nutritionist will visit your facility for an interactive information and education session on any nutrition topic of interest or concern for your facility. We can provide practical and interesting staff development tailored to your facilities requirements.

Nutrition Australia Resources – Nutrition Australia publishes many bright and colourful resources suitable for use in the Childcare environment. These include booklets, books, nutrition kits, posters, leaflets and magnets. Our very popular books – Food & Accreditation Guidelines for Childcare Services, Menu Planning for Childcare Centres and Recipe Remedies for OSHC are also available. Phone or email for a copy of Nutrition Australia’s publication order form.

Nutrition & Food Handling Course – Nutrition Australia’s Nutrition and Food Handling Course can help Long Day Care Centres to meet the QIAS requirements outlined in Principles 6.1 and 6.2, and Family Day Care providers to meet the FCDQA requirements outlined in Principle 4.2. Our qualified Dietitian/Nutritionist will visit your facility and present a two hour nutrition and food handling course for up to 25 people. Topics covered in the course include:

  • Nutrition concerns and requirements for children in OSHC
  • Dietary Guidelines for Children
  • Nutrition Policy
  • Food Hygiene
  • Food Handling Practices

Smaller facilities might like to team up with staff from another nearby OSHC so the cost can be shared.

Food Safety Audit – Nutrition Australia’s Food Safety Audit will help you meet the Indicators of High Quality Care in Principle 6.2 of the QIAS Quality Practices Guide. A qualified Dietitian/Nutritionist will visit your facility to observe and audit your food hygiene and handling procedures. Our Dietitian/Nutritionist will view your policies and protocols; discuss current food safety legislation and accreditation guidelines; check the standards are being met; and provide food safety information relevant to your Childcare facility. You will be provided with a written report outlining the outcome of the audit with recommendations to better meet (or continue to meet) the food safety standards and limit the possibility of any future food safety issues developing.

Parent Workshops – A qualified Dietitian/Nutritionist can visit your facility and provide practical advice for parents of infants, toddlers and young children. These one hour interactive information sessions usually cover two or three topics of interest and might include:

  • Infant nutrition
  • Developing healthy eating habits
  • Achieving adequate nutrition with minimal fuss
  • Dealing with fussy eaters
  • Composition of lunch boxes and appropriate snacks
  • Food allergy and intolerances
  • Food variety
  • How to make food activities safe and fun
