'Healthy Food; Healthy Planet' Kit

The 2010 Nutrition Week Kit, 'Healthy Food; Healthy Planet', is available to download.

National Nude Food Day is Coming! 13th October 2010 as part of Nutriton Week 2010.

Nude Food : Some schools call it nude food, some schools call it rubbish free!

Its all about encouraging kids and their families to pack their lunches and snacks without the use of any wrapping. Each Australian household produces an average of 1.14 tonnes of waste per year. Nude food is also about encouraging healthy eating habits  and an understanding of 'everyday foods' and 'sometimes foods'.

This Wednesday 25 August, Nutrition Australia launched the ‘Healthy Food Guidelines for above-pension Supported Residential Services’ manual to help over 100 SRS facilities make small and easy changes to their menu to ensure their residents have the nutrients they need to grow old gracefully.

SRS’s are privately owned businesses providing accommodation and personal care for those who can no longer live independently at home. Although they cater for a range of age groups, the average age of those living in ‘above-pension’ facilities is 83.

In partnership with Qld Cricket and with funding from the Queensland Government, Nutrition Australia Qld (NAQ) has conducted a “healthy sporting club make-over” project with 3 cricket club canteens in the Brisbane North Area to transform them into health promoting environments.

The project is aimed at increasing the availability and promotion of healthy food choices. Creating a health promoting sporting canteen is important in terms of promoting health and wellbeing within the club community, ensuring consistency of message and providing choice to consumers.

Sporting canteens face many of the same barriers that school canteens face in trying to create and promote healthier menus. Most notably a shortage of regular volunteers and limited equipment can make the change towards a healthier menu just that little bit more challenging.

Through our work with the cricket clubs we have trialled a number of strategies that have proved successful in assisting clubs in creating a healthier menu, promoting the canteens and supporting a health promoting environment at the clubs.

People with Dementia find it increasingly difficult to recognise and consume food. This can lead to poor nutrition. They often tolerate finger food meals better than the traditional sit down meals. To help maintain their independence, people with dementia can benefit from a meal pattern incorporating finger foods.

The Nutrition Australia Queensland Aged Care Advisory Service is developing a Finger Foods Cookbook for Queensland Aged Care facilities and the carers of people with dementia. We are seeking contributions fromQueensland Aged Care Advisory Service members. If your facility has a great recipe we would like to hear from you. Recipes will be assessed by our team and appropriate acknowledgement will be given if your recipe is included in the cookbook.

As part of developing this resource we are also very interested in your experiences as a carer of people with dementia-the difficulties you have faced; how you have managed to overcome these; and any resources you have found helpful.

If you have a recipe or any experiences you would like to share please contact our Queensland Aged Care Dietitian, Amelia Webster –awebster@naqld.org by the 25th of July 2010.

Nelson’s senior citizens have been told to give their eating habits a ‘warrant of fitness’ by expert
dietitian, Kaye Dennison. “As we grow older, we are very good at reviewing our housing, hobbies
and horsepower to suit our changing needs, but don’t take the same interest in what we’re
eating,” Dennison said.
