Physical Activity
Regular activity or sport is part of the healthy lifestyle
that Nutrition Australia recommends for all people. For some, the benefits are
to stay in shape or to enjoy the company of fellow exercisers. Others undertake
sport to put themselves to the test. A very few win Gold Medals or break records
as a result. But it is mostly personal satisfaction that drives us to achieve
our sporting goals or to maintain good health through an active lifestyle.
Special attention to nutrition will ensure that you get
the best from the activities of your choice, and maximum benefits over the long
term. Whether health, enjoyment or performance is at stake will depend on the
situation, but each of these issues may be important to you.
The National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians
The guidelines refer to the minimum levels of physical
activity required for good health. They are not intended to high level
fitness or sports training. Try to carry out all guidelines and for best
results combine an active lifestyle with healthy eating. These guidelines
were developed by the University of Western Australia and the Centre for Health
Promotion and Research Sydney, for the Commonwealth Department of Health and
Aged Care.
