Nutrition in Schools Advisory Service

The School Environment

Promoting nutrition in the school environment can happen in many ways, but having a healthy tuckshop is essential. A tuckshop that serves healthy foods will reinforce the healthy food messages that students are taught in class. A healthy tuckshop makes healthier food choices easier choices for students.

Other ways to promote nutrition within the school environment, include:

  • Establish a tuckshop policy which includes promoting healthy foods
  • Involve students, teachers, parents in tuckshop decisions
  • Promote healthy foods throughout the school eg, swimming club, vending machines
  • Make sure students have adequate shaded, seating areas for meals
  • Allow students time to eat meals
  • Staff should try to be good role models for students
