Nutrition in Schools Advisory Service
Guidelines on Specific Nutrients
1. Eat foods containing calcium.
The National Nutrition Survey 1995 again confirmed the
need for this guideline. It was found that 12-15 year old girls failed to reach
the Recommended Dietary Intake for Calcium.
Ongoing education is still required to stress the
importance of a diet containing adequate calcium in order to help prevent
osteoporosis in later life. Osteoporosis is a thinning of the bones resulting in
fracture.
The two major influences on peak bone mass are calcium
intake and exercise before 20-25 years of age.
Keeping teenagers active and ensuring they have the
necessary amount of calcium in their diets will help reduce incidence the of
this major health problem in later life.
