Phytochemicals
Phytochemicals are biologically active compounds found in
plant foods. Scientists have known about them for many years, but it was thought
they were not needed to maintain good health. However, research is now revealing
that they probably hold the key to protecting us from many common health
problems such as heart disease and some cancers.
There are many types of phytochemicals. All have one or a
variety of actions such as:
- anticancer
- antifungal
- antibacterial
- hormonal
- immune enhancing
Given that that National Nutrition Survey 1995 found that
children and adolescents consumed less than the recommended amounts of fruits
and vegetables, it is probably important that some focus is given to students
about the importance of plant foods in the diet. This education could include
some knowledge about the role of phytochemicals in maintaining optimal health.
