Enjoy a Wide Variety of Nutritious
Foods

The importance of this guideline has probably been underestimated by the general public until fairly recently. At school, children need to gain a good understanding of the importance of eating a wide variety of foods.

  • A diet with a wide variety of foods helps to ensure adequate growth and development
  • Eating a wide variety of foods during childhood helps to establish good eating habits for later life
  • Variety ensures adequate amounts nutrients and beneficial plant food compounds are contained in the diet
  • Variety is also a way of limiting any toxic compounds that may be in any one food

To eat a wide variety of foods, is a very important and positive message. It gives a clear message about what we should be eating. Food variety means eating lots of different foods each day and as the seasons change to eat the different foods that season provides.

Nutrition Australia uses 30 different food types per day as a good guide to excellent daily food variety.
