Underweight Children
Described as "Failure to Thrive" these children
display poor weight gain. In Australia attention to this problem has focused
largely within the Aboriginal communities. However, failure to thrive is not
solely limited to this group. It may be caused by one or all of the following:
- Poor nutrition - simply a poorly balanced, inadequate
diet that does not provide adequate nutrients for growth and development
- Lack of love and care - while nutritional intake may be
adequate, lack of appropriate love and care and result in failure to thrive
- Poor living conditions - poor water and sanitation also
result in failure to thrive
Only a small proportion of children are classified as
underweight. Being underweight has serious consequences. Families of children
suspected of being underweight should be encouraged to seek advice from a GP,
dietitian, school nurse or health worker.
