MEDIA RELEASE: October 2004
THE HEALTHY EATING PYRAMID GROWS UP
Nutrition Australia is releasing a modified version of the Healthy Eating Pyramid to coincide with Nutrition Week, October 10-16, 2004 .
Twenty-two years after the initial release, the Healthy Living Pyramid reminds us to move more , while reaffirming the nutritionally sound eating habits of the Healthy Eating Pyramid. Nutrition Australia 's original Healthy Eating Pyramid should not be confused with either the version developed in the United States nor with the CSIRO pyramid. Both of these nutrition education tools incorporate a list of suggested servings from the various food groups in the pyramid. Nutrition Australia recognises the differences in nutritional requirements which occur between age groups and across varying levels of physical activity. The Nutrition Australia plan is simple – eat a wide variety of foods in the proportions indicated by the Healthy Living Pyramid and keep active.
Jodi Phillips, National Executive Officer for Nutrition Australia says, “While it is important to eat well, we should not underestimate how vital physical activity is to a healthy lifestyle. This does not necessarily mean going to the gym or jogging. Incorporating activities into your life such as gardening, climbing stairs instead of taking the lift, and hand washing the car can make a difference."
Jodi also emphasises “Regular physical activity has benefits such as lifting mood and concentration, and decreasing the effects of stress. Health benefits can be gained from even small amounts of activity. Choosing activities that fit in with your lifestyle make it easier do something active every day."
The Nutrition Week Kit 2004 provides further ideas on how to incorporate healthy eating and physical activity into your life and can be found at www.nutritionaustralia.org
