Summary of Nutrition and Dietetics Courses
Studying nutrition, whether it is for your career or as a hobby, can be a dynamic and interesting time.
You will need to decide whether you wish to work as a nutritionist, or a dietitian, or perhaps in the food technology area. Compared to nutritionists, dietitians usually have the most comprehensive training (4-5 years at university), as opposed to the 3 years university a nutritionists may have. Many high profile nutritionists have studied dietetics.
Talk to as many nutritionist and dietitians that you can, and don't be afraid to ask someone where they studied, and what their qualifications are. If the course you are interested in does not appear on this list, determine if the course is known to or recommended by an appropriate professional body associated with the Federation of Australian Nutrition Organisations (FANO).
Many positions for dietitans request that you have graduated from a Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) accredited course. This then means you are eligible for membership of DAA. Depending on your future employment plans it is important know if the course you wish to study is DAA accredited. Below is a list of Nutrition and Dietitian courses run throughout Australia but not all are DAA accredited. Visit the DAA website at http://www.daa.asn.au/ for more information.
