QLD Nutrition Australia Queensland Division now also provide private consultations for individuals seeking nutrition advice. We are renting a room to interested dietitians who have their own private practice and members of the public are able to see a dietitian for a fee (concessions and rebates available). Community and Public Health Nutrition Projects

The programs Nutrition Australia conducts are as follows:

Seminars

Nutrition Australia conducts two seminars a year on a variety of topics on food and nutrition. Each seminar attracts more than 100 people from professional groups and the general public.

Media

Nutrition Australia has a strong working relationship with Queensland’s media. Nutrition Australia has a national health magazine Pabulum and has regular print media and radio interviews.

Nutrition Australia Web-Site (www.NutritionAustralia.org)

Nutrition Australia’s national website has been developed and designed in Queensland and is now maintained by now maintained by NA Western Australia.

www.NutritionAustralia.org features downloadable frequently asked questions, position papers, information for the media and Nutrition Australia events occurring in each State and Territory.

PROGRAMS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN IN MIND

Nutrition Australia has developed a number of programs that support and promote nutrition to child care facilities and to parents.

Child Care Advisory Service

The Child Care Advisory Service provides childcare workers with current information on nutrition and food issues via a quarterly newsletter and telephone enquiry service. Nutrition Australia (Qld) has produced a booklet that assists child care centres to achieve the necessary standard for accreditation. Nutrition Australia staff undertake menu assessments and food safety audits to assist centres with accreditation. In addition, Nutrition Australia conducts nutrition and food handling courses for child care workers across all child care activities (eg long day care, family day care, Outside School Hours Care, Vacation Care). Nutrition Australia Queensland also conducts nutrition information sessions for parents, focussing on nutrition for children, along with easy meal and snack ideas.

Fun Not Fuss With Food

Nutrition Australia received funding from the Golden Casket Funding Program to develop a written resource to be used in conjunction with a positive parenting program to specifically address child nutrition and eating behaviour issues.

PROGRAMS WITH SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN IN MIND

Nutrition Australia conducts a number of programs that support and promote nutrition in the school community.

Nutrition in Schools (School Tuckshops / Canteens)

The Nutrition in Schools Advisory Service operates through Nutrition Australia to provide teachers, school tuckshop / canteen convenors and school health nurses with up-to-date nutrition information via a newsletter and telephone enquiry service. Nutrition Australia also works closely with food industry helping them to produce healthy, nutritious foods suitable for use in school tuckshops, and assisting in the promotion of food products that meet Nutrition Australia’s Food Selection Guidelines for Children and Adolescents. Nutrition Australia is currently a vital part of the Queensland Government’s Smart Choices strategy which will be implemented in all Queensland state schools by January 2007.

Science Centre

Funded by food industry, Nutrition Australia developed an interactive, computer-based "Choose a Meal Exhibit" that is on display at the Science Centre, Brisbane.

PROGRAMS WITH OLDER AUSTRALIANS IN MIND

Nutrition Australia has developed a number of programs that support and promote the nutrition needs of older Australians, ranging from independent Australians through to older Australians requiring care.

Aged Care Advisory Service

The Aged Care Advisory Service for aged care facilities offers nutrition and food service advice via a quarterly newsletter and a telephone enquiry service. Nutrition Australia regularly conducts menu assessments for aged care facilities and offers in-service training for staff on food and hygiene issues. In 2005and 2006 NA staff have conducted a series of workshops and lectures in Cairns, Rockhampton and Brisbane.

Working Well Program

Nutrition Australia offers a range of workplace health promotion programs to assist Australian businesses to boost the productivity, motivation, nutrition, work / life balance, overall wellbeing, energy levels and general health of their staff. View more details on this program (pdf).

Nutrition Australia Advisory Service

Nutrition Australia operates a telephone enquiry service for the general public. Nutrition professionals staff the phones to answer queries ranging from specific diet issues to general food product information. Queensland Health supports this service with core funding. Call (07) 3257 4393 to speak with one of our dietitians.

Nutrition Resource Centre

The ‘Shop front’ service for the general public at the Nutrition Australia Queensland office features publications, posters and feeding supplements.

Feeding Supplement Service

This project offers support to the general public by providing nutritional advice and access to nutritional feeding supplements at very reasonable prices. The service is open Monday to Friday 9 am – 4 pm, and orders can be placed on 07 3257 4393.

Consultancies

Nutrition Australia undertakes a variety of consultancies including nutrition lectures and cooking demonstrations, advice on food service in schools, boarding schools, child care centres, aged care facilities and workplaces.

Committee Profile - 2006

Activities of Nutrition Australia Divisions are overseen by a Committee of Management. The Committee consists of professionals from various health, nutrition, education and business fields. In Queensland, Committee meetings are held monthly at the Bowen Hills office. The Annual General Meeting is usually held in March of each year.
